Combining experimentation and comfort, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld signs this renowned design armchair in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam.
The juxtaposition of right angles ‒ backrest and seat that meet at the floor and armrests that morph into support pieces ‒ are hallmark features of the Utrecht armchair, which became a symbol of the Neoplastic movement.
In addition to the Utrecht armchair, the family also includes a curved three-seat sofa and two-seat sofa, all with weight-bearing structure made of steel and featuring a zig-zag or blanket-stitch upholstery detail.
