LC4 CP chaise-longue by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, an homage by Cassina to Charlotte Perriand for the occasion of the 2014 Louis Vuitton Icônes Collection.

Now on show at the Cassina London Showroom part of the installation “Charlotte Perriand, an icon of modernity” also featuring new Perriand re-editions by Cassina.
London, 13 September, 2014 - Cassina shares its passion with Louis Vuitton for Charlotte Perriand, one of the most pioneering architects from the 20th Century, with the installation “Charlotte Perriand, an icon of modernity”, a comprehensive project to honour this magnificent contemporary legend.
An installation inspired by the futuristic mountain shelter Refuge Tonneau
A first glimpse of the fascinating works of Charlotte Perriand is captured through the large round portholes recreated on the windows of the Cassina London showroom which recall the Refuge Tonneau designed by Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret in 1938 and completely reconstructed for the first time by Cassina at the Salone del Mobile in 2012.
On entering the showroom, a giant black and white photograph of Charlotte Perriand in Savoy, France, underlines her great passion for the mountains and expresses the determination and independence of this unique feminine figure. Here, one red and one yellow structure similar to the refuge with an octagonal framework have been constructed in coloured Plexiglas® and illuminated from below by LED lights.
These capsules house the highly innovative limited edition (1000) of the LC4 CP chaise-longue designed by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand and the new re-editions launched this year by Cassina, the Indochine wooden swivel armchair and the Mexique table.
Iconic inspiration for timeless elegance
Louis Vuitton chose Charlotte Perriand’s non-conformist style as inspiration for the 2014 Spring /Summer 2014 and Fall/ Winter 2014-2015 Icônes Collections. Her passion for travelling, photography, architecture and design led her to create visionary designs with a refined minimalism.
The tribute edition LC4 CP ‘relaxing machine’
The inspiration of this tribute piece dates back to the then controversial - now renowned - photo of Charlotte Perriand relaxing on one of the first models of the chaise-longue with a self-supporting mattress attached directly to the frame. Considered as the ultimate ‘relaxing machine,’ this object has always been special for Charlotte Perriand as it perfectly reflects her idea of functional furniture which caters to the natural human form to create maximum comfort.
The most innovative workmanship in 80 years of history
The LC4 CP is highly innovative thanks to the workmanship of the self-supporting mattress which has been developed using Cassina’s industrial know-how and Louis Vuitton’s expertise in saddlery craftsmanship: the natural cow hide leather supplied by Louis Vuitton’s tannery is attached directly to the structure, and the contrasting dark brown saddle-leather has been applied for the foot and headrest.
Characteristic Louis Vuitton details can be particularly recognised in the yellow stitching of the natural saddle leather and the elegant leather headrest straps which recall the workmanship of the Louis Vuitton signature handbags.
Each basalt coloured base carries the dedication“Hommage de Cassina à Charlotte Perriand à l’occasion de la Collection Icônes 2014 de Louis Vuitton” and is authenticated with the progressive limited edition production number. The authors’ signatures along with the Cassina I Maestri logo are engraved, as always, on the chrome structure to underline that Cassina is the only authorised company to manufacture furniture designed by Charlotte Perriand. This distinctive design icon is available at premium Cassina boutiques around the world.
