Record auction sales for Charlotte Perriand at Christie’s presentation of Daniel Lebard's Collection
Charlotte Perriand confirms her status as one of the most sought-after 20th Century designers and registers new record sales at Christie’s recent Daniel Lebard Collection: Through the Prism of Modernity auction held in Paris. The collection, celebrating forty years of passion for design, photography and contemporary art from the 1950s to the 1970s, attracted bidders from all over the world (32 registered countries) and achieved new world auction records for twenty-four artists including Charlotte Perriand.
A pioneer of modernity, architect and designer, Charlotte Perriand was committed to defining an entirely new art de vivre that would break with the traditional codes of her era. Her objective was to put human needs at the centre of each single project, often using local materials and craftsmanship she designed interiors and furniture both for commissioned projects and personal use.
Among the numerous world auction records set in this sale were the Console en applique, commande spéciale by Charlotte Perriand for Bruno Coquatrix’s apartment in Paris in 1950 which raised €836,000 and, top lot of the sale, the Table de bibliotheque eclairante illuminated bookcase, one of only two examples of the long version of the model, designed by Charlotte Perriand, Jean Prouvé and Andre Salomon for the Maison de la Médecine in 1951 circa, which brought in €1,016,000.
Today, Cassina is the only company authorised to produce the designs by Charlotte Perriand working in close collaboration with Pernette Perriand Barsac, her only heir and assistant for twenty years. Thanks to attentive philological research, these authentic reissues provide an extensive and complete vision of her multifaceted work. This collection, in continuous evolution, captures the creative heart of each design, enhancing it and bringing it into today’s world in a balanced combination of past and present.
