Thirty years after the launch of the Cab chair, Mario Bellini created a new chair that took the qualities of the older model, slimmed them down, and brought them up to date. Harnessing the expertise acquired in working with leather, the architect went for a more advanced perspective that simplifies the line of the steel frame. This was then upholstered throughout in leather, including the seat, which is treated with expanded polyurethane. The precision-perfect fit of the upholstery testifies to the complexity of the design as well as the manufacturing innovations this implied. Meanwhile, the imperceptible sense of movement generated by the slits serve to emphasise the chair’s comfort and lightness. The refined top-stitching along the entire profile provide a further example of how industrial manufacture and hand-executed tailoring. These can also be seen in the curved seat edges that ensure the chair can be stacked. This piece is ideal for furnishing warm household spaces, as well as larger public areas.
