Cassina presents the past, present and future at imm cologne 2018. The stand, characterised by the In Store Philosophy 3 concept, the coordinated image developed by Patricia Urquiola for the company’s stores, brings together Cassina’s most recent collection together with a series of new combinations for its iconic products.
Thanks to the continuous research carried out on the classics, historical ‘secrets’ reveal the importance of personalised objects, a concept which is always more actual today.
The LC3, historically known as the Fauteuil Grand Confort, was designed in 1928 by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand as part of their revolutionary interiors project.
The first prototypes were made to furnish Villa Church, owned by an American couple living in Paris, and the next year a selection was displayed – with much scandal - at the Salon d’Automne at the Grand Palais.
Each architect had designed a specific version for the exhibit, the production of which they personally financed, based on their individual ideas and tastes. Their final choice was to show the Le Corbusier version.
Following the exhibition the three architects took their personal prototypes home: Charlotte Perriand to her apartment in Montparnasse, Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret to rue Jacob in the Latin Quarter, until 1934 when Le Corbusier moved to his new apartment in rue Nungesser-et-Coli.
During imm cologne, Cassina presents two of the three Exemplaire Personnel models, one by Le Corbusier and the other by Charlotte Perriand.
The personal examples of these armchairs are part of a more ample research to discover the farsighted approach of Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand to design tailor-made furniture for specific architectural projects.
Cassina, in collaboration with the Le Corbusier Foundation and heirs of the architects, has in fact put into production a number of historical pieces, for example from the Villa Church and Villa La Roche projects, recognisable for their non-standard use of colour and constructive details.
The Exemplaire Personnel also differ from the standard LC models in their colour combinations and quality of leather.

Authentic personalised models.
Today personalised furniture is always more appreciated and sought after. Cassina has therefore decided to re-propose these models in a limited edition of 100 pieces each. Marked with the signatures of the three authors, the Cassina branding and progressive ID number (1-100), the pieces are an authentic representation of the contemporaneity of these modern architects.
A further interpretation of the iconic Utrecht armchair.
The Utrecht armchair by Gerrit T. Rietveld has been subject to a number of recent interpretations that explore this great classic first designed in 1935 for the Dutch department store Metz&co.
In this case, the armchair has been revived with an unusual Friesian upholstery.
Concepts from the book This Will Be The Place emerge through the products on show.
The fluidity of space, hybridization of types, and circularity of time and forms analysed in the critical readings of the pioneering book This Will Be The Place, curated by Felix Burrichter and launched last year for the 90th anniversary of Cassina, all emerge in the stand’s presentation.
The Cassina products naturally dialogue together in a perfect interpretation of today’s contemporary evolving interiors.
Floe Insel sofa by Patricia Urquiola is completely in tune with the principle of flexible interiors. This visually dynamic piece has large asymmetrical volumes that give a strong sense of comfort.
A clear interaction with the user and another expression of a need for versatility of spaces and furniture is Konstantin Grcic’s Soft Props. A setting for public or private conversations defined by a graphic line that almost abstractly designs a space, tracing the edge of the sofa and creating a more intimate boundary made comfortable by soft seats and varying cushions.
Also suitable for a flexible domestic setting are the Baleno shelves, designed by the Bouroullec brothers in a first collaboration with Cassina. Like the vertebrae of a whale, these shelves flex under the weight of books and become a wall decoration when combined together in repeated elements, for a constantly transforming space. The second piece by the two French designers is born from the Cassina catalogue drawing on family memories to create a new product. Chair or small armchair? Cotone is the union of a very soft, cosy down seat with a minimal, rigid supporting structure that brings to life a model that conveys all the comfort of a padded chair for the dining table.
New solutions and upgrades are presented for some designs from the catalogue. Generous dimensions and greater comfort for the Beam Sofa System by Patricia Urquiola with the new Super Beam sofa system. New proportions and details for the 8 sofa by Piero Lissoni with 8 Cube, which offers padded elements without side and back panels, in addition to a new swivel armchair. While the Caprice and Passion line of chairs by Philippe Starck have been extended to include high stools with a stem base.
Some designs are enriched with new finishes and colours, like for example the Réaction Poétique collection of accessories by Jaime Hayon and the Accordo table by Charlotte Perriand in new bright lacquers.
Other upgrades considerably change the original design, like the Lebeau table designed by Patrick Jouin for Cassina in 2003. Now revisited in wood with a light base made of alternating full and hollow spaces with curved solid wood slats, the table is the perfect expression of the company’s high level production skills.
To conclude, a true return to the brand’s roots with Gio Ponti’s Leggera chair to commemorate the intense and long-lasting partnership that was established in the early 1950s and that led to the production of the iconic Superleggera in 1957.
