NEOPLASTIC DECONSTRUCTIONS

Gerrit Rietveld designed the iconic Utrecht armchair in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, adjusting the design to the needs of large-scale distribution.

While focused on product values of comfort and relaxation, the market-driven approach successfully separates the elements into parts, making it an icon of the neoplastic movement and of the Dutch architect’s innovative insight.

The armchair is a timeless design piece that furnishes the leading executive offices and most legendary lounge areas in the world. 

Structure

Loadbearing seat and backrest frame in tubular steel with elastic webbing. Armrests in solid poplar.

Padding

Variable density polyurethane foam. Resin treated polyester fiber batting laminated to fabric lining.

Upholstery

Fabric or leather.
