EXPLORATION OF COLOR
A variation of the iconic 1918 chair by G. T. Rietveld, the Black Red and Blue wood armchair grew out of the Dutch master’s unflagging exploration and the clear evolution of the archetypal model with a view to the exploration of color.

Over the years, the author introduced several versions of the Red and Blue armchair painted to suit his clients’ taste and the interiors in which they would be placed. The Black Red and Blue version, crafted in the 1920s for school teacher Wicher Zeilmaker, is an example of Rietveld’s exploration of color.

The story goes that the owners of the various examples displayed them in their homes as valuable abstract-realist sculptures and only in a few cases actually used them to sit on, adding cushions to make them more comfortable, just as Cassina does in its Black Red and Blue version.
