Principal Bar Chair is the result of a simple and sincere use of forms and materials, making its minimalist design timeless in every respect. Meticulously designed down to the smallest detail, this chair is a durable piece to be treasured for generations.

 

Part of the Principal series designed by Bodil Kjær in 1961, the Principal Counter Chair is characterised by the formal balance that defines the entire collection. In this model, the curves of the seat and backrest soften the linear geometry of the structure.

Bodil Kjær, one of the last living pioneers of mid-century Scandinavian design and a female trailblazer in the field of architecture of her time, created her Principal series in 1961 as part of an architectural exploration of interior solutions for modern living, called Elements of Architecture.

Comprising an upholstered chair, a bra chair and a counter chair, the Principal series embodies Kjær's cosmopolitan and forward-thinking vision and her modernist design language that fits seamlessly into contemporary interiors.


With their circular seat and gently rounded backrest, beautifully upholstered, the Principal Bar Chair and Principal Counter Chair add softness to the clear, linear geometry, inviting you to pause for a moment. The Principal Stool completes the family, drawing inspiration from the chair and echoing the distinctive formal balance of the entire collection.

Bodil Kjaer

Bodil Kjær, Professor, Architect MAA (Member of the Association of Academic Architects in Denmark) was born in Denmark in 1932. She was educated in Denmark, England and the USA, and practised as an architect, designer and planner from her own offices in Copenhagen and London.
