NEOPLASTIC GEOMETRIES

A furniture icon, designed by a 20th century master.

The Utrecht armchair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld is among the most recognizable Cassina pieces. It is distinguished by unmistakable graphic repetition punctuated by the juxtaposition of elements that form right angles.

The outdoor version maintains intact the characteristics of the larger Utrecht XL model. The materials were carefully studied for use in outdoor settings. To prevent water from penetrating, the recycled PET fibre batting is laminated to a water-repellent lining that envelops the internal metal structure and Okoume wood armrests.

PRODUCTION YEAR

2023

Designed by Dutch architect Gerrit Thomas Rietveld in 1935 for the Metz&Co. department store, the Utrecht armchair takes its name from the native city of its author. Among the most recognizable pieces by Cassina, which has produced it under exclusive global rights since 1988, the armchair is distinguished by its unmistakable clean, dynamic graphic rhythm punctuated by the juxtaposition of elements that form right angles. Utrecht is the perfect synthesis of experimentation and comfort. The outdoor version maintains the same aesthetic and constructive features as the larger model, the Utrecht XL, developed to offer more ample, comfortable seating.

The materials and upholstery were carefully studied for suitability in outdoor settings. The soft recycled PET batting is laminated to a water-repellent lining that wraps the internal metal structure and Okoume wood armrests, preventing water from penetrating. The exposed zippers, along with the Velcro® closures hidden under the seat and armrests allow complete removal of the upholstery, which is all in one piece, without disassembling the elements that make up the armchair.

Regular use of protective covers, available for separate purchase, helps preserve the aesthetic and functional characteristics of the outdoor product.

However, it is recommended to place products intended for outdoor use in controlled environments such as verandas and covered or partially covered terraces, avoiding full exposure to direct sunlight and weather conditions.

I MAESTRI

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, born in Utrecht on 24 June 1888, seems possessed of two personalities, each so distinct that one might take his work to be that of more than one artist. The first personality is that seen in the craftsman cabinet-maker working in a primordial idiom, re-inventing chairs and other furniture as if no one had ever built them before him and following a structural code all of his own; the second is that of the architect working with elegant formulas, determined to drive home the rationalist and neoplastic message in the context of European architecture. The two activities alternate, overlap, and fuse in a perfect osmosis unfolding then into a logical sequence.
