Gerrit Rietveld designed the Utrecht armchair in 1935 for the Metz & Co department store in Amsterdam, adjusting the design to the needs of large-scale distribution.

The XL version is a revisitation of the 1935 model: an anthropometric answer to the rising demand for more spacious seating. Along with the Utrecht armchair, the Utrecht XL furnishes elite formal business and executive offices worldwide. 

Structure

Loadbearing seat and backrest frame in tubular steel with elastic webbing.
Armrests in solid poplar. 

Padding

Variable density polyurethane foam.
Resin treated polyester fiber batting laminated to fabric lining. 

Upholstery

Variable density polyurethane foam.
Resin treated polyester fiber batting laminated to fabric lining.
